Résumé

Sarcoptic mange, caused by Sarcoptes scabiei, is a debilitating and often fatal disease affecting wildlife. Raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) are particularly vulnerable, due to their social behavior and susceptibility to environmental stressors. In the Republic of Korea, mange is among the most frequently diagnosed conditions in rescued raccoon dogs; however, early admission prognostic indicators remain poorly defined. In this study, we aimed to identify hematologic and serum biochemical predictors of survival outcomes in mange-affected raccoon dogs rescued 2017–24. We retrospectively analyzed the data of 261 raccoon dogs with mange, classified as survivors (n=149) or non-survivors (n=112). Blood samples collected at admission were evaluated for complete blood count and serum biochemistry. Compared with survivors, non-survivors exhibited significantly lower levels of hemoglobin, leukocytes, neutrophils, platelets, glucose, albumin, total protein, and calcium, along with elevated levels of phosphorus and potassium. Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified albumin levels, neutrophil counts, and blood urea nitrogen levels as independent predictors of mortality. Incorporating season into the model revealed that rescues in non-winter months were associated with improved survival. The final model demonstrated good predictive performance (area under the curve=0.782). These findings suggest that hypoalbuminemia, leukocyte abnormalities, and metabolic imbalances are key indicators of poor prognosis in mange-affected raccoon dogs. Early recognition of these parameters may guide clinical decisions and enable timely interventions. Seasonal vulnerability, particularly during winter, should be considered in wildlife rehabilitation protocols to improve outcomes.
